Running head: FIRST IMPRESSIONS

چکیده

People often draw trait inferences from facial appearance of other people. We investigated the minimal conditions under which people make such inferences. In five studies, each focusing on a specific trait judgment, we manipulated the time exposure to unfamiliar faces. Judgments made after 100 ms exposure highly correlated with judgments made in the absence of time constraints, suggesting that this exposure was sufficient for participants to form an impression. In fact, for all judgments -attractiveness, likeability, trustworthiness, competence, and aggressiveness -increased time exposure did not significantly improve the correlations. With increased exposure from 100 to 500 ms, participants’ judgments became more negative, response times for judgments decreased, and confidence in judgments increased. With increased exposure from 500 to 1000 ms, only confidence increased for some of the judgments, suggesting that additional time may simply boost confidence in judgments. However, increased time exposure led to more differentiated person impressions.

Running head: DEVELOPING TRUST: FIRST IMPRESSIONS AND EXPERIENCE 1 Developing Trust: First Impressions and Experience

Using the repeated Trust Game, we investigated how first impressions and experience affect trusting dispositions, beliefs, and behaviors. As in previous research, trusting beliefs and trust-related behaviors were greater at the start of the game for partners with trustworthy faces; and higher later in the game for partners who reciprocated. Three additional findings extended beyond the previous...

Running Head: ASYMMETRY AND IMPRESSION FORMATION Effects of asymmetric questions on impression formation: A trade-off between evidence diagnosticity and frequency

When examining social targets, people may ask asymmetric questions, that is, questions for which “yes” and “no” answers are neither equally diagnostic nor equally frequent. The consequences of this information-gathering strategy on impression formation deserve empirical investigation. The present work explored the role played by the trade-off between the diagnosticity and frequency of answers t...

An experimental exploration of the relationship between subjective impressions of illumination and physical fidelity

Two experiments were carried out to explore the effect of rendering and interface fidelity on subjective impressions of illumination and perceived presence after exposure to a virtual environment (VE). In particular, a study that compares a real-world task situation to its computer graphics simulation counterpart is presented. The computer graphics simulation was based on photometry data acquir...

The Influence of Gaze and Head Tilt on the Impression of Listening Agents

We conducted an experiment in which we measured the the impressions of artificial listening agents. Two different listening characters were modeled, using effects of head tilt and gaze-behaviour found in previous work. The impressions of these two characters were rated by users. Most of the modeled effects, such as unfriendlyness, dominance and liveliness were observed as modeled. Our study als...
